The España Chapter, NSDAR

Madrid, Spain

The España Chapter, NSDAR National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) was the first Units Overseas Chapter to be confirmed in the twenty-first century. After months of hard work on the part of Carol Rilling and Ann G. Peavey, National Vice Chairman-Genealogy, (Units Overseas Committee), we held our organizing meeting in Madrid, Spain, on February 3, 2001, with ten organizing members in attendance.

As part of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, we share the three-fold purpose of the National Society: education, historic preservation, and patriotism. At the same time, our focus is on bringing attention to Spain’s important role in helping the American colonies to gain independence. Our research into the role of Spaniards and the Spanish Crown in the American Revolutionary War aims to make this little-known fact generally recognized.

Spain (Spanish: España), officially the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Reino de España), is in Southwestern Europe. Its territory also includes two archipelagos: the Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa, and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea.

With an area of 195,360 square miles (505,990 km²), Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe, the second-largest country in Western Europe and the European Union. With a population exceeding 48.5 million, Spain is the sixth-most populous country in Europe, and the fourth-most populous country in the European Union.

Spain's capital and largest city is Madrid; other major urban areas include Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Málaga, and Bilbao.

The origins of the Roman name Hispania, and the modern España, are uncertain, although the Phoenicians referred to the region as Spania, four thousand years ago.

The current time in mainland Spain is 00:00 CEST.
